What Goes In An Estimator’s Testing Kit
When a fire burns, it can cause multiple types of damage to your Oakland home. The several types of materials inside your house burn differently under the various conditions that took place. Fires burn at a variety of temperatures until they get put out. The fuel burned and conditions such as heat and oxygen change the types of damage created as a result of the blaze. Some types of soot residues can be easily cleaned whereas others stick to items so bad that they need to be replaced.
The main goal of any restoration project is to return things to preloss conditions by replacing as little things as possible. During the initial scope of a fire damage project in Oakland, our SERVPRO estimators test different substances to determine whether they can be saved by cleaning or not. This step in the overall process is vital so that we do not say we can clean something we cannot or replace an object that could have been treated and saved.
Testing every affected material that exists in a building can be strenuous, and it requires special tools and chemicals. All of our estimators at SERVPRO carry a testing kit with them to every job. The testing kit contains all of the necessary items we need to accurately test the cleanability of smoke residues.
Every estimator test kit comes with personal protection equipment and a respirator for entering hazardous areas. They also are equipped with cleaning tools such as steel wool that can test the amount of agitation required on an item. Scrapers get used to test whether plastic melted onto appliances can be scraped off or not. Dry cleaning sponges are on hand to see how well porous surfaces can be dry cleaned.
The next array of equipment our SERVPRO crew possesses when completing the initial project scope is a variety of chemicals and detergents. Our estimator stocks a large number of products in his kit so that he can test the effectiveness of different chemicals on the various affected surfaces.
