SERVPRO Supports the Helping Hands in the San Leandro Community After a Crisis with Sooty Residue

A fire can happen anywhere, and when the American Cancer Society had a small one at its Discovery Shop in Oakland, we had to help. We cleaned up soot residue from windows, walls, wooden beams, and floors. This work helped reduce the odor caused by the soot and also kept the carbon film from transferring from those surfaces to anyone touching them.
 
I'm Pierre Cisneros, and I wanted to tell you about how mitigating soot covering those surfaces gave us the opportunity to help those in the community. The American Cancer Society assists people battling cancer, and they choose to do this through many different avenues. Establishing the Discovery Shop gives the area residents a way to help out with support and research when they purchase items. The Shop also provides a way for cancer patients and survivors to interact with the community in a productive way that encourages personal growth.
 
We at SERVPRO agree that continuing to learn throughout life keeps us prepared for life's challenges, and our work in mitigating damage to homes and businesses immensely benefits from our pursuit of ongoing training. During our training, we learned about hydroxyl generation machines that neutralize soot found on clothing and other objects after the majority of fires.
 
We used hydroxyl machines to freshen up the clothing items so customers could once again search for spectacular garments to complete their wardrobes, prepare for a job interview or speech, or look fantastic just going to the movies or visiting friends.
 
Just like clothing can make a person feel energized and vibrant, special finds like unique knick-knacks or vintage photo frames can feel like a lottery win. We wiped these down with specialized cleaning agents that remove soot without removing any finishes or varnishes. We set these all back in relatively the same place they occupied during the fire and fronted them for the customers' convenience.
